God’s Grace | Your Motive For Obedience

From The Gospel Mystery of Sanctification: Growing in Holiness by Living in Union with Christ by Walter Marshall:

God always encouraged his people to live holy lives because of the grace he has given to them. This means you must first receive and believe the gospel in your own heart. If you do not do this, you will never be able to obey God. There are many Scripture passages that teach this, but here are a few that make God’s grace your motive for obedience. You obey because…

  • You are dead to sin and alive to God through Jesus Christ your Lord. (Romans 6:11)

  • Sin shall not be your master, for you are not under the law but under grace. (Romans 6:14)

  • You are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit… and God will make your mortal body live by his Spirit dwelling in you. (Romans 8:9,11)

  • Your bodies are the members of Christ, and the temples of the Holy Spirit. (1 Corinthians 6:15, 19)

  • God made him who knew no sin to be sin for us so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Corinthians 5:21)

  • God has promised that he will dwell with us, and walk in us, and be to us a father, and we shall be to him sons and daughters. (2 Corinthians 6:18, 7:1)

  • God has forgiven us for Christ’s sake and considers us his dear children. Christ has loved us, and given himself for us. (Ephesians 2:8, 4:32)

  • We have been raised with Christ, and when Christ, who is our life appears, then we also shall appear with him in glory. (Colossians 3:1,4)

  • God has said, “I will never leave you or forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)

  • We have many promises made to us (2 Corinthians 7:1)

Read through the Scriptures, and you will see, with delight, that this theme runs completely through them: the gospel is what encourages you to obey God.
